Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG)

CubicFarms ESG Commitment

At CubicFarms, our business is deeply intertwined with environmental, social and governance (ESG) concerns. We’re making an active effort to deliver sustainable benefits to society needed for the long term. Investors looking for financial returns while also responding to global challenges are looking to the landscape of ESG and impact investing for a reduction in downside risk and increased resilience. We’re combining cost benefits with a positive effect on the environment to create shareholder value and make the world a better place.

Positively impacting the environment is at the start of our ESG practices because our technologies help significantly reduce the amount of fresh water and energy used by farmers. It’s not just using fewer natural resources, it’s also eliminating the need for pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizer. With every installation and expansion of our indoor growing systems, farmers are using innovative technologies. It’s the future of farming.

Environmental commitments

Our farmer founders’ commitment to develop indoor growing technologies while minimizing our impact on the environment remains one of our top priorities.

CubicFarms and HydroGreen have endorsed the Decade of Ag, the first-ever sector-specific vision for the sustainable food systems of the future. Our endorsement is a pledge to work with leaders and organizations and work toward a resilient, restorative, economically viable, and climate-smart agricultural system that produces abundant nutritious food and livestock feed.

Climate change

Warnings of the imminent pressures on our food systems through demand for consumption of animal products, which are becoming more apparent as our global population increases, include estimates suggesting a global population of almost 10 billion by 2050.

CubicFarms actively contributes to scientific research developed through a collaboration of academic researchers and industry experts. Hydroponic fodder and greenhouse gas emissions: a potential avenue for climate mitigation strategy and policy development was published by Canadian Science Publishing in FACETS, the official journal of the Royal Society of Canada’s Academy of Science.

Dr. Lenore Newman, Director and Canada Research Chair in Food Security and co-author of this research commented, “With approximately 70% of all agricultural land being used for some aspect of livestock production, beef, and dairy farming currently represents approximately 14.5% of all human-induced GHG emissions. Feed production and animal waste represents the two largest sources of these GHG emissions, representing 45% and 39% respectively. This latest research estimated that the HydroGreen demonstration farm produced 7.4% fewer GHG emissions (per nutrient mass) than were found with conventional barley grain fodder farming, and greater reductions can be achieved with improved seed-to-fodder output, indicating that transitioning to such systems can result in GHG reductions and (ultimately) climate mitigation benefits. These are exciting findings and a bright light in the otherwise gloomy world of climate change.

“Finding solutions like the HydroGreen hydroponic growing system that can lower overall GHG emissions caused by livestock will be critical to solving the world’s GHG emission problems and reduce the overall effects of global warming.”

Key numbers for hydrogreen

360 Harvests per year and ZERO waste

A HydroGreen Grow System can grow up to 360 consistent and high-quality harvests annually and eliminate loses of corn silage (average 15% shrinkage) before it is fed to the cows.

25 million lbs of feed on 1/10th of the water

A HydroGreen Vertical Pastures™ (12 Grow Modules), can grow up to 25 million lbs of fresh livestock feed every year using just 1/10th of the water used in traditional livestock feed grown
in irrigated fields.

Saving 500 million+ gallons per year.

Just one HydroGreen Vertical Pastures™ could save over 500 million gallons of fresh water per year. That’s enough water to give one glass to every person on the planet.

Social commitments

We’re also committed to the health and safety of our employees. CubicFarms is attracting and retaining world-class talent and passionate individuals who believe in our mission and thrive in the workplace, in the office or on the farm.

There aren’t many things that can instill a sense of purpose and fuel innovation like creating the technology to feed our changing world. Our team members feel a sense of responsibility for the care of the planet and the people who live in communities all over.

The CubicFarms Community Giving program organizes priority giving initiatives specifically chosen to align with our ESG priorities, like adding food insecurity by dedicated fundraising programs for local food banks and participating as a team for the World Vision Global 6K for Water.

Local communities using our technologies for indoor automated growing are experiencing more sustainable access to fresh food and livestock feed and are using natural resources more sustainably.

Local labour

Local food grown by local people, anywhere in the world. What could be simpler? By localizing food and livestock feed grown indoors using our technologies, we’re enabling more food independence for communities that need it. And as it turns out, with our increasing global population, we’re all going to need it.

We’ve built strong relationships with an ecosystem of farmers, food service distributors, and more. Instead of concentrating the areas where produce is grown, our technologies allow for more local growing distributed all over the world and in communities near you. This allows farmers to grow with less physical labour than before, promoting greater inclusivity. We’re advocating for government support for indoor growing and additional financing opportunities for farmers, empowering them to localize food production and operations so they can provide local jobs for more vibrant, thriving communities.

At CubicFarms, we embrace different perspectives and value the contributions of our team members. One of our core values is respect, and we take that a step further by creating a culture celebrating diversity and allowing individuals to do their best work and thrive. No matter who you are or what role you hold, our goal is to foster an inclusive workplace where people feel they belong, that their unique talents matter, and that their needs are cared for by our leaders and other team members. We’re a growing company with talented people working toward a common goal. We’re actively engaging with our local communities by giving back, getting involved, and bringing our whole selves to work. CubicFarms has an engaged workforce with a mission to transform agriculture, using our curiosity and resourcefulness with our teams.

Animal welfare

We care about animal welfare and use our considerable animal and plant science knowledge to create technologies that support animal health and wellbeing. We are conducting research and data collection on dairy cattle consuming HydroGreen fresh livestock feed as part of the herd’s ration. Anecdotal preliminary results on a sample of dairy cattle are showing impressive health improvements for close up cows and calves, that showed much better health during weaning and through the entire feeding period, compared to a sample of non-HydroGreen calves. The nutritious fresh livestock feed grown in a HydroGreen Grow System contains high quality protein in the form of amino acids and simple peptides, resulting in high quality energy in the form of simple sugars and starches, with nutrients that are critical for health, growth, production, and reproduction. In fact, the texture and palatability as well as the higher moisture of the HydroGreen fresh feed improves ration conditioning, there’s less sorting of ingredients by the animals, and a lower incidence of upper respiratory issues due to dust inhalation. Not only is the fresh livestock feed nutritious, but it’s also devoid of anti-nutritional factors, with reduced haemagglutinins, trypsin inhibitors, tannins and pentosans, and phytic acid.
